Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef

Our dive trip started out with a low level flight over the Great Barrier Reef, out to Lizard Island. The views were absolutely amazing, the water was clear, and you can actually see all of the reefs underwater. From there we boarded our boat, and spent the next 3 days cruising back to Cairns, diving along the way.

The boat was great, nice little cabin, great food, excellent crew who were very friendly. There were about 28 divers, from Japan, the US, Vietnam, a professional rugby player from Wales and us. Between dives we relaxed up on the sun deck, watching the reefs and islands go by.

The diving was absolutely amazing. We did 12 dives in 3 days, so it was very intense, but great. We saw turtles, eels, sea snakes, giant cod, sharks (not that scary in the end), beautiful coral... There trip photographer took some great pictures of the things we saw diving, so I can't claim credit for the underwater pictures.

The trip was a huge success, with the exception of the last night. Most nights we dropped anchor and stayed in one place, but on the last night we travelled back to Cairns from 11pm to 6am. The water was very rough, and we both got very seasick - we spent most of the night crossing pathes on the way to the bathroom to vomit, not so fun. Today we're just relaxing in Cairns, tomorrow we'll head off to Magnetic Island.
